Greensboro, N.C. — The Guilford County Board of Commissioners should vote on implementing a 180-day moratorium on new data centers during the commissioners meeting at 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the Old Guilford County Courthouse at 301 W. Market St. in downtown Greensboro.

The commissioners scheduled the public hearing about a month ago, following the example of many county and municipal boards in the Piedmont that have debated moratoriums on authorizing data centers.

The Thursday session is set for the Old Guilford County Courthouse on 301 West Market Street, Greensboro, NC 27401, the county government address where commissioners meet.

Guilford County Board of Commissioners Chair Melvin Skip Alston leads the board that will take up the moratorium question. A pause of 180 days would give planners time to study zoning and infrastructure rules before new data center approvals move forward.

Piedmont counties have been weighing similar freezes as power and water demand from large computing facilities draws public scrutiny. Guilford County scheduled its hearing weeks ago so residents could speak before any temporary ban is locked in.

Thursday 5:30 p.m. vote at the Old Guilford County Courthouse is the next public checkpoint for anyone tracking how the Greensboro-area land-use process treats new data center proposals through the end of the year and into early 2027 if the freeze is approved.

Residents who want to speak can plan for the 5:30 p.m. Thursday hearing at 301 West Market Street, where the Board of Commissioners previously set the data center moratorium on the agenda after watching neighboring Piedmont boards take similar steps.
