GREENSBORO, N.C. — The UNC Greensboro men’s soccer team suffered its first home loss of the season Tuesday night, falling 5-1 to the Marshall Thundering Herd at UNCG Soccer Stadium in a non-conference match.

The Spartans came in at 4-1-5 overall and 1-0-1 in the Southern Conference, riding a 3-1 win over NC State in Greensboro on Oct. 7. Marshall, from the Sun Belt, was the second of three marquee non-conference matchups this month for head coach Chris Rich and the Spartans.

Marshall opened the scoring 10:25 into the contest when Ramado Pierre-Louis crossed to Carl Romberg, who beat Spartan goalkeeper Seth Wilson for his fourth goal of the season. UNCG answered in the 33rd minute on a goal from Caleb Borneo to tie it 1-1. In the waning seconds of the half, Joao Roberto cut inside from the right wing and scored from just outside the box to send Marshall to halftime ahead 2-1.

The match turned after UNCG went down a man with a red card in the 57th minute. Alvaro Alvarez made it 3-1 at the 65:19 mark off a mistimed clearance, Nikita Pakhomov added a goal in the 82nd minute, and Pierre-Louis capped the night in the 87th minute for a four-point match with a goal and two assists. The five goals were the most Marshall had scored in a road match since a 6-1 win at James Madison in 2021.

UNCG actually outshot Marshall 10-9, but the Herd held a 7-4 edge in shots on goal, and Marshall goalkeeper Alan Horrocks made three saves. The loss drops the Spartans to 4-2-5. Next up for UNCG is a midweek trip to High Point on Oct. 20 to wrap up its October run of marquee non-conference matches.
