SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Two UNC Greensboro women’s golfers who tied for medalist honors at Country Club of Spartanburg this week picked up a shared Southern Conference award on Wednesday, as the league named Kasey McIlvaine and Baker Hudson its Co-Golfers of the Week.
Both finished the two-round Terrier Intercollegiate, played Monday and Tuesday and hosted by Wofford, at even-par 144. McIlvaine shot 72 in each round and topped the 67-player field with 30 pars. Hudson opened at 71, one under, then posted a 73 to climb two places, and she tied for the best par-four scoring average at 4.00. Rio Nakama of Seminole State also finished at 144 to share the individual crown.
The win was a career first for Hudson, a New Bern native, and the second individual title of the fall for McIlvaine, who is from Raleigh. McIlvaine also took the weekly league award on Sept. 16, and teammate Elle Burnette earned it Sept. 2, giving the Spartans four of the honors so far this season. Samford’s Gabi Nicastro shares this week’s award with the UNCG pair.
As a team, UNCG placed second of 12 schools, its second runner-up result this fall, with a 591 total that was 15 over par after rounds of 294 and 297. Conference rival ETSU won at 588. The Spartans made more pars than any other team, 121, and tied for the lowest par-three average at 3.13. Burnette added a top-five finish, tying for fourth at 145.
