TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Hannah Gapes broke the LaVern Gibson course record with an 18:57.6 win in the women’s 6-kilometer race Friday, yet No. 1 NC State still settled for second behind No. 2 BYU at the Under Armour Pre-Nationals, 88 points to 84.

Gapes became the first woman under 19 minutes on the championship layout. Bethany Michalak added an eighth-place 19:29.9, and Angelina Napoleon took 13th in 19:41.0 to lock in Wolfpack scoring.

BYU trailed at the 2-kilometer and 4-kilometer marks before closing hardest. Notre Dame placed third with 213 points. North Carolina finished fifth at 249 and Duke sixth at 260 in a crowded ACC group inside the blue race.

In the white race, Jessica Jazwinski led State with a runner-up 20:34.0 while BYU won the team column 24-32. The Wolfpack men totaled 500 points for 17th among 44 squads.

NC State now shifts toward the ACC championships on Oct. 30 in Blacksburg, Virginia. BYU pointed ahead to Big 12 title weekend in Stillwater, Oklahoma, in two weeks.

For a program that entered the meet ranked No. 1, the narrow team loss is a data point rather than a season verdict, especially with Gapes producing the fastest women’s time the course has seen.

Pack coaches can lean on Gapes’ form and the depth shown in the white race as they map a championship season that still has ACC and NCAA meets ahead. Fans following the Wolfpack from Raleigh to the mountains will watch whether the team can flip that four-point gap when the national ranks tighten in November after conference trophies are decided this fall season.
