GREENSBORO, N.C. — After years of false starts, a Piggly Wiggly grocery store on West Florida Street in southwest Greensboro is scheduled to open Wednesday, Oct. 21, giving a neighborhood that has gone without a nearby supermarket a place to buy fresh food.

The store announced the date on its social media page this week. Its owners first planned the location in 2019 and once hoped to open it in 2020. The pandemic, supply shortages and permit trouble pushed that back again and again, and co-owner Robin Dhakal has said inspections were the largest hurdle, along with licensing and getting utilities hooked up.

The most recent setback came earlier this month. A soft opening had been planned for Wednesday, Oct. 7, but a sign on the door called it off and moved the first day for shoppers to Oct. 21, the date already set for the grand opening. That earlier soft opening had been meant as a first look inside for neighbors before the bigger celebration, and it was not clear at the time why it was pushed back or whether the grand opening would also shift.

The shop sits where West Florida Street meets Freeman Mill Square, along a corridor southwest of downtown Greensboro that is lined with small local stores and restaurants. Getting affordable fresh groceries has long been a problem for people who live nearby.

Shoppers can expect fresh produce, refrigerated and frozen goods, and ready-to-eat items such as rotisserie chicken. Hiring locally is part of the plan too, with the owners saying store jobs should go to residents of the blocks around it.
