GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford County voters in Greensboro who show up at the polls without a photo ID and cast a provisional ballot have until noon on Tuesday, Nov. 10, to bring an acceptable ID to the county elections office, even though an older and shorter deadline was still posted on part of the state elections website this weekend.

The general voting page kept by the North Carolina State Board of Elections still told voters on Saturday that the ID had to arrive by midday three business days after the election, which for the Nov. 3 election would be Friday, Nov. 6. The board’s own early voting announcement from Oct. 9 and its voter ID questions page both list the later date.

The longer window comes from Session Law 2026-60, signed Aug. 11, which moved the cure period from three business days to five. Skipping the weekend, the count after Nov. 3 runs Nov. 4, 5 and 6, then Nov. 9 and Nov. 10.

Every voter is allowed to cast a ballot with or without a photo ID. Most people simply show a driver’s license, and other accepted forms include a state ID from the NCDMV, a voter photo ID card from a county board of elections, an approved college or government employee ID, and a military or veterans ID card.

Voters who cannot show an ID because of an obstacle such as a lack of transportation, illness, a work schedule or a lost card can complete an ID Exception Form where they vote and then use a provisional ballot. A voter who simply forgot an ID can also go home, retrieve it and come back to vote a regular ballot while the polls are still open.

Any registered voter can get a free voter photo ID card from the county board of elections by having a photo taken and supplying a name, birth date and the final four digits of a Social Security number.
