GREENSBORO, N.C. — A 30-year-old woman was killed before dawn Sunday when the car she was driving left Brassfield Road twice and slammed into a tree in the median, the Greensboro Police Department said.

Officers were sent to the 3100 block of Brassfield Road shortly before 5:30 a.m. for a crash involving only one vehicle. The driver died at the scene.

According to police, the woman was heading southwest in a Honda Accord. The car first drifted off the right shoulder, came back onto the pavement, then crossed off the left side of the road and struck the tree.

Investigators said she was not wearing a seat belt and that excessive speed played a part in the wreck. Police said her family has been told.

Police logged the call at about 5:23 a.m. Sunday and described it as a single-car wreck in which the driver lost control.

The case drew extra attention after the department put out the wrong name for the driver in its first statement. Police later issued a correction and released the right name.

Deputy Chief M.J. Harris said Sunday that he had apologized to the family directly, called the error unacceptable and said the department owns the mistake. Department leaders also spoke with relatives, police said.

Harris said the department is now taking a hard look at how it notifies families and releases names, so the same kind of error does not happen again.

The Crash Reconstruction Unit of the Greensboro Police Department is handling the case, and police have said no other details are available yet.
