Greensboro Stage 2 Water Rules Hit as Drought Deepens

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Stage 2 mandatory water restrictions are already on the books in Greensboro, with enforcement set to begin Monday as drought conditions keep pressure on the Triad supply.

Officials say pipelines shared with Reidsville and Burlington, plus the Piedmont Triad Regional Water Authority reservoir at Randleman, now cover a big slice of daily use while local sources stay tight.

Director of Water Resources Michael Borchers said those outside connections now supply about a third of what customers use each day, roughly 12 million gallons.

Borchers warned that stripping away Randleman and the other shared feeds would shove Greensboro into stage 6 cutbacks rather than the current stage 2 posture.

A plant expansion that started in 2025 is meant to add about 12 million gallons a day of treatment capacity by fall 2028, with Greensboro slated for about 10 million gallons of that increase.

Landscapers say the new rules hit hardest on fresh plantings and new turf that have no stored moisture to fall back on, and they warn small firms could lose installation work if customers postpone projects.

Automatic sprinklers are limited to once a week under the stage 2 rules, and golf courses and athletic fields must cut water use by 40 percent.

The city plans to keep the mandatory restrictions in place for 30 days starting with enforcement on Nov. 9, asking residents and businesses to conserve while the interconnects keep taps flowing.

Residents who water lawns, wash cars or fill pools are being told to follow the stage 2 calendar closely once enforcement begins, because drought recovery depends on everyone cutting back together.
