NC Crime Commission Hosts Grant-Writing Workshop Oct. 27

RALEIGH, N.C. — Police departments, local governments and nonprofits hoping to tap North Carolina’s largest pot of public safety grants can get a walk-through of the process next week.

On Tuesday, Oct. 27, the state’s Governor’s Crime Commission is running its annual all-day session for grant seekers, a Webex event lasting from 9 in the morning until 4 in the afternoon. Staff will lay out the state’s upcoming funding priorities for public safety and criminal justice and offer advice on building a strong application. A recording will be posted afterward on the Department of Public Safety’s YouTube channel for anyone who cannot attend live.

Each year the commission distributes upward of $100 million, a mix of state and federal dollars, to police and sheriff’s agencies, governments and nonprofits. The grants support crime prevention, community violence reduction, criminal justice programs and services for crime victims.

The day is split by program area. After an opening review of the calendar, deadlines and expectations, staff will cover how federal Justice Department grant dollars can be spent and demonstrate the online grants management system. Separate sessions follow on juvenile justice and the Children’s Justice Act; the Byrne Justice Assistance Grant, the Byrne State Crisis Intervention Program and residential substance abuse treatment; and victim services. The final session covers using data to make a program stand out.

Applicants should note one big change for the 2027 cycle: no competitive money is available through the Victims of Crime Act or the STOP grant under the Violence Against Women Act.

The commission serves as the main adviser on crime and justice issues to both the governor and the public safety secretary. It has 43 appointed and ex-officio members, including leaders of state justice and human services agencies, courts, law enforcement, local governments, nonprofits and private citizens.
