GREENSBORO, N.C. — Former Gov. Roy Cooper brought his U.S. Senate campaign to the Barber Park early voting site in Greensboro on Saturday morning, using the stop to pitch voters on lowering everyday costs as the state’s early voting window heads into its final week.

The Democrat drew a crowd of around 50 people to the park, and college students from N.C. A&T and UNC Greensboro made up a big share of it. Guilford County Sheriff Danny H. Rogers was on hand to greet him.

Cooper framed the visit around his Make Stuff Cost Less tour. He told the crowd he wants to bring down what families pay for groceries, energy and housing, and to make health care and child care easier to afford. He also said he would push to end tariffs he called chaotic, restore health coverage and offer child care tax credits.

The Nash County native is running against a Republican opponent who once served as a former chair of the Republican National Committee, in one of the most closely watched Senate races in the country. Cooper accused his rival of backing policies that drove up prices for working families. The Republican nominee spent Friday campaigning in Robeson County alongside Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, while former President Donald Trump weighed in on the race earlier in the week.

Turnout has been heavy so far. The State Board of Elections counts upward of one million ballots already cast across North Carolina. Election Day is Nov. 3, which leaves about 10 days for both campaigns to reach voters who have not yet made it to the polls. For Guilford County residents, Barber Park is one of several early voting sites open through the end of the week, and the campaign stop was timed to catch voters heading in to cast ballots.
