Hundreds March to Early Voting Site in Greensboro Unity Walk

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Roughly 250 people walked through downtown Greensboro on Sunday afternoon to an early voting site, part of a Unity Walk to the Polls led by an interfaith immigrant justice group.

Two dozen groups took part in all: the Greensboro Interfaith Immigrant Justice Coalition, which hosted, plus 23 civic and civil rights organizations it recruited as partners. The afternoon opened with a ceremony outside the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, a church on East Friendly Avenue, featuring keynote talks, a gospel choir and the Grimsley High School Blue Steel Drumline, along with oversized butterfly puppets.

Organizers also set aside time to recognize new Americans getting ready to cast their first ballots. From the church, marchers covered nine-tenths of a mile to the Old Guilford County Courthouse in the 300 block of West Market Street, one of the county’s early voting locations.

At the courthouse, groups staffed tables with election information, children tried out a mock voting booth, and eligible residents who were not yet on the rolls signed up to vote.

That last step is possible only during the early voting window. State election rules let people who are not registered in a county sign up and vote right away at an early voting site, a process known as same-day registration. During early voting, Guilford County voters may use any site in the county, unlike Election Day, when registered voters must go to their assigned precinct.

The general election wraps up with Election Day on Tuesday, Nov. 3, when polls open at precinct sites across Guilford County.
