CLEMSON, S.C. — Dabo Swinney is not second-guessing the offseason call that shaped Clemson’s quarterback room, even with the passing game near the bottom of college football.
At his weekly news conference Tuesday, the Tigers coach said he had no regrets about passing on a transfer quarterback after Cade Klubnik moved on. He said a coach has to live with the choices he makes.
That choice left the job to senior Christopher Vizzina, who had made one career start, and freshman Tait Reynolds. Vizzina opened the year as the starter but left the second game with a left elbow injury and has not played since, though Swinney said he is close to full health.
The numbers show the strain. Clemson has thrown only two touchdown passes, the lowest total in the country, and its 182.6 passing yards per game rank last in the ACC.
The unranked Tigers stand 4-3 overall and 2-2 in league play after last week’s home loss to Virginia Tech. Next up is a trip to Florida State, which is 3-4, for a 7 p.m. kickoff on Oct. 31.
