GREENSBORO, N.C. — A fatal shooting overnight in Greensboro left a man dead after officers found him unresponsive in a parking lot near Bernau Avenue and Baker Avenue with injuries consistent with gunfire.
Units reached the scene about 12:23 a.m. and worked to keep him alive until firefighters and county medics arrived. The victim, 33-year-old Darion Djuan Trapp, went by ambulance to a hospital and doctors declared him dead at 1:33 a.m.
Greensboro police called the case an active criminal probe and said a motive and suspect description were not ready for public release. The death is listed as the city 22nd homicide of 2026.
Any charges that follow would be reviewed by the Guilford County district attorney office, which handles homicide cases from Greensboro and the rest of the county.
The Bernau Avenue and Baker Avenue corner also saw a June overnight shooting that left someone hurt, and police earlier investigated a nonfatal shooting along Bernau Avenue in the 4400 block.
Council briefings earlier this fall showed overall homicides trailing last year even while aggravated shootings climbed, and clearance rates on killings were up compared with the same stretch of 2025.
Detectives have not named a suspect. Neighbors should expect continued police presence while the parking lot and nearby blocks are processed. A charge is an accusation, and anyone later arrested is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. Witnesses are asked to share what they saw with investigators.
Both published accounts place officers at the lot shortly after midnight and describe life-saving efforts before the ambulance trip. No arrest had been announced when those accounts published.
