GREENSBORO, N.C. — A broken 12-inch water main closed part of Yanceyville Street in Greensboro on Thursday night and left a handful of businesses along the corridor with dry taps, city officials said.
Crews shut down one southbound lane between Revolution Mill Drive and Textile Drive so they could dig out and fix the line. Five businesses lost water service while the work went on. The city set out signs and cones and asked drivers to pick another route until the job was done.
Officials said they expected the lane to open back up by about 6 a.m. Friday, Oct. 30, with crews staying on the site until the repair was finished.
Once water is flowing again, some people nearby may see cloudy or discolored water. The city’s advice is to run the cold tap for a few minutes from a fixture with no aerator, like a bathtub faucet or an outdoor spigot, and keep it running until it comes out clear.
Anyone who runs into a water or sewer emergency, including a change in how the tap water tastes, smells or looks, can reach the Greensboro Water Resources Department around the clock at 336-373-2033. The city posts updates on lane and road closures on its road projects page at greensboro-nc.gov.
City officials did not say what caused the pipe to fail or which businesses lost service. Drivers who use Yanceyville Street to reach downtown Greensboro on Friday morning should check the road projects page before they leave in case the repair runs past the 6 a.m. target and the southbound lane stays closed longer.
