GREENSBORO, N.C. — Drivers heading downtown for North Carolina A&T State University homecoming can park for free in city-owned spaces through the weekend, the City of Greensboro said.
The free period began Friday, Oct. 30, at 5 p.m. It includes three city garages, the decks on Greene Street, Church Street and February One, plus city surface lots and metered spots along the street. The Eugene Street Parking Deck joined the list at no charge for the rest of the weekend after a Friday night event at First National Bank Field let out.
The break only applies to lots and decks the city owns, which carry city signs. Private lots set their own rules, so drivers should read posted signs before leaving a car.
The city is also pointing visitors to transit. Greensboro Transit Agency buses keep their usual schedules and fares, though detours around the festivities may slow some routes. The downtown Hopper Trolley runs its regular schedule all weekend and is free to ride.
Crowds are expected to be heavy. This year marks the 100th homecoming the university recognizes, dating back to 1926, and the main events land this weekend after a week of festivities. Estimates put the crowd as high as 300,000 people, and downtown hotel rooms are scarce.
For visitors planning a trip, the simplest approach is to pick a city deck near the evening plans, leave extra time for detours and use the trolley to move between downtown stops instead of hunting for a second space. Parking details are posted on the city website, and live bus locations are available through the transit agency tracker.
