GREENSBORO, N.C. — Greensboro pastor and activist Greg Drumwright will take an at-large seat on the Guilford County Board of Commissioners after a lopsided win in Tuesday’s general election.
The Democrat collected 142,467 votes, or 67%, while Republican Mike Perdue drew 71,657 votes, or 33%, in complete but unofficial returns posted overnight.
The seat opened up when longtime Democratic commissioner Kay Cashion decided against seeking another term. Guilford County is governed by a nine-member Board of Commissioners, which holds county spending and zoning authority, so the at-large post gives Drumwright a countywide vote on budgets that touch every Greensboro household.
Drumwright leads the Citadel Church in Greensboro. He drew national attention as a minister and counselor to the family of George Floyd after Floyd was killed in May 2020, and his profile grew again on Halloween 2020, when police arrested and pepper-sprayed him as he led marchers toward the courthouse in Graham, the Alamance County seat, during a push for voting rights.
After the results came in, Drumwright said he wants to close county budget gaps without leaning on steep tax rate increases for homeowners and business owners. He also named school funding as a top priority, pointing to his years as a classroom teacher and his support for Guilford County Schools teachers and students.
Drumwright described the win as the start of a new day for county politics after what he called a very long year, and he said he plans to work with the other incoming commissioners on an affordable way to pay for county services.
The results remain unofficial until county election officials complete the canvass.
