GREENSBORO, N.C. — A Saturday wreck in Greensboro left people hurt and blocked the northbound side of Highway 29 at the Reedy Fork interchange, and officials directed every northbound driver off that highway and onto the connecting parkway.
Authorities had not released a victim count, the severity of those injuries or a tally of cars and trucks in the pileup. They also had not offered a time when traffic could return to the highway. Motorists were asked to choose a different path and proceed carefully near the scene.
The Greensboro Police Department, the Municipal Police agency based at 100 East Police Plaza, Greensboro, NC 27402, had not given a timetable for reopening the northbound lanes. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol — Troop C covers interstate and state highway enforcement in Guilford County, including I-40, I-85, and I-73/I-74.
The blockage sits on a North-south US highway through Greensboro, at an interchange that feeds the city’s urban loop system. With those lanes closed, the only way forward for drivers headed north was the exit onto Reedy Fork Parkway. Anyone using that stretch to cut through the north side of the city on Saturday would have met a hard stop until police allowed traffic to resume.
First reports did not say whether southbound lanes stayed open or whether wreckers had already cleared the pavement. No names of drivers or a cause have been released. HERE Greensboro will update this story as the Greensboro Police Department releases more information about the wreck.
